What is Suffolk: Creating the Greenest County?
We’re proud of Suffolk and our tradition of doing things differently. Now we really want to take the lead.
Creating the Greenest County is an aspiration that involves the whole county in enhancing the natural and historic environment and responding to climate change. The partnership provides an overall aspiration for many existing projects, encourages further recognition and resourcing of them and seeks to inspire further actions in communities, businesses and schools.
A priority in Suffolk’s Community Strategy, Creating the Greenest County brings together many organisations in the county – from local government to volunteer groups and businesses – who have signed the Statement of Intent with the shared aim of changing the way we live and work. The 44 signatories to the Statement of Intent are varied and include such organisations as University College Suffolk, Adnams plc, and the Suffolk Diocese.
Creating the Greenest County was launched in 2007 by John Gummer MP. The partnership has gone from strength to strength, working with local communities and buinesses to reduce their carbon footprint, enhance their natural environment and promote local food production amongst other actions. The partnership was partly responsible for ensuring that biodiversity remained a priority in the Local Area Agreement from 2008 to 2011.
The partnership has three key themes
- Climate Mitigation
- Climate Adaptation
- Protect and enhancing the natural environment
We want to achieve this through
- Tackling climate change and its effects
- Engaging with communities and businesses in Suffolk
- Enhancing Suffolk’s landscape, biodiversity and historic environment
- Promoting and supporting local food and drink production
